First introduced in 1882, Fougère Royale completely revolutionized the world of men's perfumes and established the art of modern perfumery as it exists today. Originally created by Houbigant owner and chief perfumer Paul Parquet, Fougère Royale was the first “fougère” (or fern-like) perfume ever created, establishing a completely new fragrance style which remains today the most popular family in men’s fragrances: Brut by Fabergé, Paco Rabanne, Azzarro, Boss by Hugo Boss and Prada by Prada for Men are all descendents in a fougere line which can be traced to the original Houbigant creation.
The original formula has been re-worked masterfully in collaboration with esteemed perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, head perfumer at Givaudan. Of working on Fougere Royale for Houbigant, Rodrigo said:
“I am absolutely thrilled, and feel extremely privileged, to have been asked by the House of Houbigant to participate in the rebirth of Fougère Royale. As a perfumer, I can say this is a once-in-a-life-time gift.”
The new fragrance retains its natural colouring and is composed from a very high percentage of natural ingredients, some of which have been purchased from the original suppliers. Held in a stunning bottle inspired by the original Lalique design, Fougère Royale is a rare celebration of tradition combined with stylish modern taste. Inspired for the man of today by the most original men’s creation of all time. To create Fougère Royale Houbigant have used exclusively the finest quality raw materials that exist.
Fougère Royale opens with an uplifting cocktail of sparkling citrus oils which blend into an aromatic bouquet of Mediterranean herbs, where lavender and Moroccan chamomile oil dictate the tempo.
A redolent heart follows, and the floral-spicy "Rondeletia" accord is gently revealed through rich geranium nuances and warm spices. A floral intermezzo showcases rare rose essences and absolutes, spiked by pepper, cinnamon and delicate carnation.
Finally, a grand finale of earthy, ambery and woody harmonies, where moss notes join a sensual patchouli theme enriched by warm coumarinic undertones of tonka beans and clary sage absolute.
Ingredients note:
- "Opur" is a registered trade mark owned by Givaudan, and denotes natural ingredients of the highest available quality - similar to vintage in winemaking.
- The creation of the 1882 fougere owed its existence to a newly isolated scent molecule called 'coumarin' which is derived from the natural raw material, Tonka Bean. So concentrated is the bean with this chemical that coumarin crystals will form naturally on an opened bean.
Bottle design:
In collaboration with designer Jean-Christophe Gaydon, Houbigant have introduced a contemporary style to one of the all time classic Houbigant crystal flacons. Originally manufactured by Lalique, this stunning flacon was first introduced at the beginning of the 20th century.
