Considered to be the scent that launched Caron's reputation, Narcisse Noir was created in 1911. Ernest Daltroff was of course the perfumer and the iconic bottle design (still in production for the perfume extract) was created by Felecie Wanpouille. Its success was hard on the heels of Chantecler (no longer produced), launched by the House of Caron in 1906 and their first major creation.
Narcisse Noir has endured as one of the greatest Caron classics, a combination of the purity of the Narcissus and the stark whispering beauty of the colour black. This timeless fragrance is an invitation to succumb to a swirl of intoxicating florals.
Her head thrown back listlessly, with her provocative eyes and fulsome lips, Gloria Swanson immortalises the very essence of this perfume in the 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, when she languorously utters the words: "Black Narcissus", one of the earliest product placements on film.
